DAY 1: Transport from Montreal to Inukshuk Lodge

Departure from Montreal towards Kuujjuaq, followed by a seaplane journey from Kuujjuaq to Inukshuk Lodge.

DAYS 2 TO 8: Icebergs, Wildlife Observation, and Landscapes

On the first day we arrive at the lodges, we’ll drop off our luggage. The lodges can accommodate guests in double occupancy, as well as groups of 3 to 4 people. The following days will be marked by a variety of activities.

Wildlife Observation:
Arctic foxes and hares have adapted their coloring to blend in with the rocky landscape. Willow ptarmigan mirror the hues and textures of the low-lying plants. Wildlife is everywhere and very active. Birds, in particular, occupy the islands in large numbers.

The rough-legged hawk dominates the tundra. Arctic terns, eider ducks, and black guillemots abound on the rocky islands where they nest. One especially impressive bird, the red-throated loon, is very common and shares its territory with its bigger relative, the common loon, which is less frequently seen. By early July, most Canada geese and snow geese have passed through. Of larger species, sandhill cranes and trumpeter or tundra swans may still be around, though they are rarer.

From late July through September, snowy owl sightings are very common, and they often pose quite obligingly. Ungava Bay offers a unique array of wildlife, flora, and landscapes… a guaranteed life experience and sense of the exotic. For photographers seeking authenticity, wildlife, and striking landscapes, the opportunities here are extraordinary.

Icebergs and Pack Ice:
When Ungava Bay is mirror-calm, it’s time to approach the pack ice and icebergs.

It’s a truly impressive sight… Enjoying lunch offshore, anchored against the ice, is a one-of-a-kind experience, and the surrounding wildlife will provide all the entertainment you need. The stunning scenery and atmosphere will have you draining your batteries and filling your memory cards to the brim.

Encountering Inuit hunters and fishers will remain an unforgettable moment. Discovering their way of life—pitsik (dried Arctic char), mussel gathering, and beluga hunting—is a reality that can sometimes be striking.

Icebergs and the pack ice will be our primary focus. The simple pleasure of lingering to admire these massive, brilliantly colored blocks of ice makes the journey worthwhile on its own. The sounds of the ice and the terns create an incredible auditory memory.

A good part of the day will be devoted to traveling along the pack ice in search of the wildlife that thrives along this icy edge.

Landscapes:
They are unique… The defining feature of this territory is the endless view—land stretches out as far as the eye can see. On the inland side, ancient glaciers have carved a gently rolling terrain, cutting channels through the rock. Amid rocky hills and green valleys stand a few ancient, low-growing spruces, twisted and full of stories. Rivers and streams wind their way through the landscape to join the salty waters of Ungava Bay.

At night, the sun barely dips below the horizon before reappearing minutes later… This enchanting ballet offers a breathtaking show of colors and shadows. The days are long, giving you plenty of time to savor them.
